Undescended Testes
Undescended testes is a relatively common condition. Most cases are, however, diagnosed in childhood. However, there are patients who have undescended testes who present later on in adulthood, either due to fertility problems, or due to testicular cancer. In some cases patients may simply be routinely found to have an undescended testis and are referred on for specialist treatment. In some cases the testicle is removed if it is within the groin, but if there are problems with the opposite testicle the testicle can be brought down into the scrotum. This will depend upon the patient’s preference, and certainly would be discussed fully with the patient. Often patients present with infertility later in life and in these instances a microdissection sperm retrieval may need to be performed.
